Some important people in the health care industry were put to the test Thursday.

Eyewitness News flew with HealthNet for an emergency exercise.

HealthNet has been there when the most critical of patients need the service. While the emergency service has served the Tri-State area for years, its safety record remains in tip-top shape. Exercises like the one the crew held Thursday is the reason why.

HealthNet aeromedical services put its crews to the test, making sure they knew what to do in an emergency situation.

HealthNet crews out of Hamlin were told to make a mock "mayday" call while flying. The crew members were told to act as if there was smoke in the helicopter's cabin and they had to make an emergency landing.

"Most important thing when we hit the ground is to make sure everyone's safe,” flight nurse Garreth Hevener said.

“We can start looking at, ‘Hey, how long are we going to be out here? What do we need to do to get stuff ready for spending the night if we need to?' "

Crews are taught not only how to find shelter, but how to build fires, how to make communication if possible and, most importantly, how to stay calm.

While the crew memebers were able to walk away from Thursday's drill, they know not all crews are always as lucky.

The exercise was part of HealthNet's survival training.

The service held Survival Day last week, where crews were taught survival skills, in case the worst should happen.
