Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia

A man who police said opened fire on Charleston's West Side Thursday afternoon has now been charged in two shootings.

Thursday's crime covered several city blocks, with the suspect finally being arrested behind Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School.

Police flooded the area as they searched for the shooter.

It all started, several blocks away, on Berkley Street.

Police said Dana Stevenson, 21, approached a man at about 2 p.m.to try to rob him of his jewelry.

But that robbery went wrong and police said Stevenson started firing several shots. The victim was hit once in the thigh and ran into a home on nearby Monongalia Street.

Stevenson was chased about 10 blocks, before being tackled by two detectives near the school.

Stevenson has been charged with malicious wounding and robbery. He was also charged for a shooting that happened on Saturday on the West Side. In that instance, police said he unloaded about 10 rounds into a carful of people near the Save-a-Lot grocery store.

Charleston police had a male suspect in custody Thursday afternoon after a shooting on the city's West Side.

The shooting was reported about 2 p.m. along Monongalia Street. A dispatcher said the victim was reportedly shot in the leg and taken to a Charleston hospital.

The suspect reportedly took off, but police were able to catch up with him. Officers told Eyewitness News that the suspect was still armed when they took him into custody.

Police had reportedly found numerous shell casings in the area where the shooting happened.
