Writing down a goal is a great motivational tool.

The Winter Series Walks/Runs are the perfect thing to put down and circle on your calendar. Signing up and training for these events can help you keep fit and help chase away those winter blahs.

The series of walks and runs are scheduled in Charleston in December, January and February. All races start and finish behind West Virginia University Charleston/Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital at 31 Street and Virginia Avenue.

Following is the schedule:

Sunday, Dec. 8 -- 1 p.m., 3,000-meter (1.8 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) run.

Sunday, Jan. 5, 1 p.m. 4,000-meter (2.4 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 8,000-meter (4.9 miles) run.

Sunday, Feb. 2 – 1 p.m. 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 10,000-meter (6.2 miles) run.

Same day registration for each event is $20. Advance registration that covers all three events is $45. Students can register for all three events for $20. WVU, CAMC and city of Charleston employees can participate for $20 for three events. Advance registration must be received by Dec. 1.

A special rate of $40 will be open to runners and walkers to do all three events, and $18 for students to do all three events. There will be a raffle drawn from the entries received that day.

Participants in the Winter Series not only do something great for their health, but they receive a few perks. Runners and walkers who finish all three events receive a hooded sweatshirt. In the first two runs, awards will be presented to the top male and female and in the following age divisions – 14 and under; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70 and over; and wheelchair. After the third race, awards will be presented in the same categories based on cumulative times for all three races.

No age group awards will be offered for the walks, but the top three males and females will win awards in the first two races with awards presented in the same categories after the third race based on cumulative times for all three events.

Volunteers who help will all three races will receive a hoody.
