When the cold weather hits, many people want to stay indoors as much as possible under a warm blanket with a cup of hot chocolate nearby.

But you don't have to be a hermit all season. Sign up for the Winter Series Walks/Runs scheduled in Charleston in December, January and February. All races start and finish behind West Virginia University Charleston/Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital at 31 Street and Virginia Avenue.

Following is the schedule:

Sunday, Dec. 8 -- 1 p.m., 3,000-meter (1.8 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) run.

Sunday, Jan. 5, 1 p.m. 4,000-meter (2.4 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 8,000-meter (4.9 miles) run.

Volunteers who help will all three races will receive a hoody.
