West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said Monday that his European investment mission is resulting in some connections with existing companies and some new prospects.
“We've met with eight existing companies doing business in West Virginia,” Tomblin said during a video teleconference from Zurich, Switzerland. “We've met with 23 prospects with the chance of getting some investment from those companies. As well as we just finished a lunch with the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce. There were about 40 companies represented at that and had a great deal of interest about West Virginia.”
Tomblin is in the midst of a journey, which in addition to Switzerland, includes stops in Spain, France, Germany and Italy. Tomblin is promoting West Virginia products in hopes of establishing stronger and deeper trade relations with members of the European Union.
The governor said more than 80 European countries invest in the state and employ more than 10,000 people.
Last year, nearly a third of West Virginia's $11 billion in exports went to Europe.
Tomblin is set to return home from his 13-day trip Tuesday.
