A benefit luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday in Charleston to raise funds for an afterschool program serving disadvantaged children at Piedmont Elementary.
The annual “In Our Shoes” event for PRO-Kids, Inc. will be held at the Beni Kedem Temple at 100 Quarrier Street and will feature a panel on leadership.
Charleston Area Medical Center President and CEO David Ramsey, University of Charleston President Edwin Welch and Judge Phyllis Carter, the acting executive director of the West Virginia Human Rights Commission will take part in the discussion. Charleston Deputy Mayor Rod Blackstone will serve as moderator.
The event, pitched to area professionals, will benefit PRO-Kids, Inc., which nurtures 50 children and offers them homework assistance, tutoring, structured enrichment activities, a hot balanced meal and a ride home.
“I’m pleased to do my part in drawing attention to PRO-Kids,” Blackstone said in a news release. “There are few organizations like it, skilled to meet the needs of at-risk families during after-school hours, when, if left alone, youngsters might be tempted by drugs, crime, and other dangerous activities. It’s definitely time Charleston stepped up to the plate, recognized the vast good this program does, and supported it.”
The organization’s most pressing need is a replacement van for the group’s transportation needs.
A group of about 150 members of area law firms, insurance companies and other professionals have been invited to the event. Anyone else interested in attending is encouraged to pre-purchase tickets.
A silent auction is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. and a meal prepared by Summit Catering will be offered at 12:00 p.m. Tickets are $45, $29 of which is tax-deductible. Corporate sponsorship levels are $500, $2,500, and $5,000.
For more information or to purchase tickets or tables, contact the group’s fundraising chair Sharon Iskra at (304)553-4513 or email@example.com. Information can also be found on the group’s Facebook page.
