Marmet , Kanawha County , West Virginia
A gathering was held Sunday at Marmet’s football field in memory of two Riverside High teenagers killed in a MacCorkle Avenue accident on Sunday.
More than 100 friends, family and community members gathered by candlelight to pray and grieve together.
Cody Perdue, 17, and Mason Roush, 18, were remembered as fun-loving, good kids who were involved in their school community.
State Police troopers said Roush was driving a Ford F-150 southbound on W.Va.
Route 61 when he tried to pass a car. Roush then struck a Chevy S-10 head-on in the northbound lanes.
Roush and Perdue, who was driving the S-10, both died. Kirsten Young, 16,who was a passenger in the S-10, was taken to CAMC General with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.
A lot of tears were shed and, after everything this school's been through in the past year, they've learned how to lean on one another for support.
"We've seen Cody grow up, and Cody's seen a lot of our kids grow up and been around for that,” coach Travis Walker said. “Always outgoing. Always got a smile on his face. Athletic kid. It's a tragedy."
Student Billy Pullen remembered his friend and spoke of how the accident impacted him.
"Makes you want to straighten up and stop doing stupid stuff like that,” Pullen said. “When you see a couple of good boys like that go, you just look back and see how lucky you are. Makes you want to straighten up a little bit."
Another vigil will be held in memory of the two teens at the Riverside High School football field Monday night at 7 p.m.
