Flatwoods , Greenup County , Kentucky
A fire in Flatwoods early Friday left 12 people without a place to call home.
Managers said smoke detectors saved lives, as everyone, with the exception of a pet, made it out.
Firefighters got the call around 2 a.m.
Dave McNeil took a picture of what was left of part of the apartment complex he lives in.
"It’s so sad,” he said. “They're all homeless now."
Property managers said one of the tenants was frying french fries, when a grease fire broke out and spread quickly.
Each unit has three smoke detectors. However, a cat died in the flames.
Residents said it was a miracle that everyone made it out safely.
The Red Cross was on hand in the overnight hours finding places for people to stay.
Some people were allowed back in to get clothing and medication that wasn't burnt.
For McNeil, everyone's safety was a big relief.
"That’s the big thing,” he said. “Everyone made it out OK. We can always put this building back, and that is exactly what we will do."
