It's no secret the Putnam County Health Department has had its problems, but now a federal investigation has been added to their troubles.
Dr. Rahul Gupta is with the Charleston-Kanawha Health Department and is advising the Putnam County Board of Health during the new transition.
Gupta confirmed that the Putnam County Health Department is under federal investigation because of the monetary problems from past years.
However, because of the investigation, he said Putnam County is now having trouble receiving federal grant money for emergency situations, a move by the federal government he said is not right.
The members of the board were in an executive meeting for more than an hour Thursday evening. Board members made no comment on the situation.
The Putnam County Health Department may have caught the attention of federal investigators.
It's no secret the department has had its problems, and a federal investigation may just add to their troubles.
Within the past few months, the Putnam County Health Department has seen a lot of changes.
They've recently been taken over by the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, following money troubles.
The department was $400,000 in debt.
In June, the Putnam health board voted to lay off the entire staff and contract services through the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.
The board laid off its 12-member staff and vacated its old location in Winfield.
Some former board members said they would not be surprised, with the previous monetary issues, that federal investigators would be taking a closer look.
A regular meeting was scheduled for Thursday, but the possibility of a federal investigation is no doubt a point of concern and could likely be addressed.
