A Rhode Island teenager has donated 10,000 shoes to homeless children across the United States.
When he was just 5 years old, Nicholas Lowinger learned that not everyone has a pair of shoes. The lesson came after Lowinger visited a homeless shelter with his mother.
In 2010, at the age of 12, Lowinger decided to form his own nonprofit and has since donated new shoes to more than 10,000 homeless children in 21 states.
"I used to take those things for granted until I realized that there were a lot of kids who didn't have those sort of luxuries," Lowinger said. "I remember my first shelter visit seeing kids who were just like me. The only difference being they had footwear that was falling apart."
Shelters send Lowinger's nonprofit, orders with children's names, gender and shoe size.
"It's more than just giving them a new pair of shoes. I'm helping kids be kids. Their self-esteem goes up. Their whole attitude on life changes. That's really what makes it so special for me," Lowinger said.
