A high school cheerleader in Texas has been asked to stay off the sidelines at the football game because she has down syndrome, her mother said.
KTRK-TV in Texas reports that the school district told 16-year-old Brittany Davila that she was a liability and could not cheer at the Deer Park, Texas, school's games .
Brittany's mom Buffy told KTRK-TV that the school district said Brittany, an honorary cheerleader, was endangering herself and her teammates by cheering on the sidelines of games.
Her mother is now working with district officials to come up with a plan to keep Brittany cheering safely.
The family's attorney said the district has a lot of explaining to do.
"Reasonable accommodations can get very creative," Sarah Frazier, attorney for the family, said. "There may be another place for all of the cheerleaders to stand to cheer from. They might be a little bit slower or they might look a little bit different, but they all want to do the same thing. They all want to be accepted for who they are."
As an honorary cheerleader, Brittany did not compete or do stunts.
