A 96-year-old woman in Boone county has been left with nothing, and State Police are blaming the woman's own niece for stealing nearly $1 million.
For years, Georgia Older has lived in her home in Uneeda, in Boone county. She's well-known and well-liked.
“Everybody knows her,” her second cousin, Alfred Gore, said. “She's been around here so long.”
But to the shock of many, police said, for the past three years, Older has been the victim of a crime committed from hundreds of miles away by her own niece, Margaret Sue Beam, 75.
State Police allege while Beam was living in Connecticut, she became her aunt's power of attorney, and then proceeded to cash in on Older's savings bonds, money market account and checking account. All told, police said Beam stole more than $800,000.
Those who know Older said she worked hard for what she had, working at the Kroger grocery store until she retired. Now they're concerned about her future.
Beam has been indicted by a Boone County grand jury for embezzlement by misuse of power of attorney.
Police picked her up from her home in Connecticut and brought her to West Virginia to face that charge. She was taken to the Southwestern Regional Jail.
A Connecticut woman was arrested after police said she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from her 96-year old aunt who lives in Boone County.
Margaret Sue Beam, 76, is charged with embezzlement by misuse of power of attorney, according to a criminal complaint filed in Boone County Magistrate Court.
West Virginia State Police said Beam obtained power of attorney documents on her elderly aunt in 2010, the complaint said. Once that document was on file, troopers said she was able to get into her aunt's safety deposit box and cashed U.S. savings bonds. She is also accused of withdrawing money out of her aunt's checking account. State Police said from 2010 until May 2013, Beam embezzled more than $800,000 from her aunt.
State Police said Beam was indicted by a Boone County grand jury on that charge in September. A warrant was issued and State Police in Connecticut arrested her this week. On Thursday, she was being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail.
The criminal complaint said Beam confessed to the allegations.
