The city of Charleston has had some hiccups with its new trash bag distribution, but a fresh supply of black trash bags and clear recycling bags was expected to arrive Tuesday.
City Collector Tonya Cotton said a new supply of black trash bags had already arrived by 11 a.m., and she expected clear recycling bags to arrive on another truck by the end of the business day.
Cotton said the bag shortage was created due to a holdup in the mail with some vouchers capital city residents were supposed to receive in the mail. She said WasteZero, the South Carolina company the city contracted with to handle the trash bag distribution, said it mailed all of the vouchers Sept. 3, but more than 1,000 units of bag slips were not received until the end of last week. This caused a lot of customers who received their slips late to flood the five retailers handling the bag distribution on Thursday and Friday, causing them to run out of bags.
“They (the stores) weren’t expecting that surge, and it cleaned them out,” Cotton said. “The stores are only ordering so much based on their capacity to store the bags.”
Cotton acknowledged there have been some issues with the new bag distribution program.
“There always is when you have something new,” she said. “We are hoping to get it ironed out before the next distribution in February.”
Customers with vouchers for trash bags can pick them up at the following locations:
* Foodland at 5003 MacCorkle Avenue in Kanawha City
* The Purple Onion, 800 Smith St.
* Drug Emporium, 5101 MacCorkle Avenue SE
* Drug Emporium, 1603 Kanawha Blvd. W
* F.M. Pile Hardware - 1625 Washington Street W.
Previously, garbage and recycling bags were available for pickup in either the city collector’s office or city manager’s office. Those options are no longer available.
