Shots rang out outside of a Huntington car rental business Thursday morning, after a man said he was angry over being told he could not rent a car.
Workers at the Enterprise Rent-a-Car on Third Avenue were shocked and scared when they said a man came to the store yelling and armed.
It was a situation that escalated quickly, but also ended quickly as Huntington police brought in the suspect.
Armed, angry and seemingly unremorseful, Clay Slash said not only is he not sorry for firing off his gun in the middle of a busy Huntington street, he plans to go back to the scene of the crime
"Just as soon as I make bond, I'm going to be up there and I'm going to woop your (EXPLETIVE)," he said.
Slash was talking about a worker at the car rental business in the 2400 block of Third Avenue, where the whole scenario allegedly started.
Police said Slash went to the store Wednesday to rent a car, but was not allowed to, so, at about 8 a.m. Thursday, they said he came back to the store, angry and with a firearm tucked into his pants.
He allegedly threatened to kill an employee inside the store, then went outside, yelling and firing off his weapon.
People living in this area, like Gary Stubblefield, said it was scary.
“That’s just wild,” Stubblefield said. “It doesn't make sense. People like that don’t deserve to be out here among us."
When asked if he was sorry, Slash said “No, I would do it again.”
Police said Slash fired off two shots in an area where people were walking and cars were driving by.
No one was reported injured.
"It could have been a lot worse,” Sgt. Darrell Booth, of Huntington police, said. “Those bullets had to come down somewhere. You can predict it - what a bullet’s going to do once it’s fired.”
Slash is facing six felony charges, but due to emotional and personal problems he said it could be worse.
“I want to go to jail,” he said. “I'm tired of women"
Slash is charged with three counts of wanton endangerment, carrying a concealed weapon without a license, possession of marijuana and intimidation against public officers.
The last charge comes from Slash allegedly threatening to kill the arresting officer and “his entire family” after being arrested.
