The alleged boxer short bandit is under arrest. He's the man who police say was caught on surveillance video, stripping down, while his friend stole from a convenience store.
That friend remained on the run Tuesday night, but Gay Washington was speaking out about why he was caught without pants.
"I was trying to get some nasty stuff off my pants," Washington said as he was leaving Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
He was allegedly caught on surveillance video at the Go-Mart in Cross Lanes, stripping down to his boxers while his friend, 22-year-old Tyler Williams of Cross Lanes took money bags from the store.
Washington says he doesn't know anything about the money bags but explained why he wanted out of his clothes.
"I took my pants off and threw them into the back of the truck so I could go into a bathroom to wash up because I was in a dumpster to get some wood to fix my building," Washington said.
After Washington's picture aired on the news, viewers helped identify him. Washington says he was one of those viewers and wasn't happy about his TV debut.
"I looked like an idiot," Washington said.
Washington is charged with breaking and entering and accessory before the fact..
If you know where Tyler Williams is, call deputies.
One of the men wanted in connection with a robbery at the Go-Mart in Cross Lanes has been taken into custody.
Kanawha County Sheriff's deputies said Gay Washington was in custody Tuesday afternoon. Deputies continue to look for Tyler Williams, 22, of Cross Lanes in connection with that incident.
Deputies issued arrest warrants for Washington and Williams Tuesday morning after they were able to positively identify them from surveillance video at the convenience store.
Kanawha County sheriff's deputies have issued warrants for two suspects in connection with a convenience store burglary in Cross Lanes, including the man who they said stripped down to his underwear outside while his accomplice went into the back of the store.
Gay Washington, 38, and Tyler Williams, 22, both of Cross Lanes are being sought in connection with the robbery Monday of the Cross Lanes Go-Mart, deputies said Tuesday.
Deputies said Washington is the man who stripped down to his boxer shorts while Williams went into the store and took four bank bags.
About 5 a.m., a black Ford Ranger pulled up to the Go-Mart on Goff Mountain Road. A suspect in a gray shirt went in several times to see what the clerk was doing, while the other decides to ditch his pants, shirt, and shoes, stripping down to just his drawers. His every move, caught on camera.
Deputies said Williams will be charged with breaking and entering, and Washington will be charged with accessory before the fact to breaking and entering.
If you have any information that could help deputies find these two men, call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office at 304-357-0169.
