Canines with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department learned a new trick Tuesday morning. This was not just any trick, but one that can help them in the field.
Nine canines went through water training: fetching and catching balls and a Frisbee in the pool. Sgt. Ron Mathis of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said the exercise will help to socialize the dogs.
The dogs jumped at the opportunity to cool off on the hot summer day. Many of them enjoyed the water, while others were a bit hesitant to embrace the water training.
Mathis said the exercise isn't about fun and play. The dogs are actually learning tools that can help them and their human partner while trying to chase and arrest someone. The goal is to get the canines used to working in wet conditions.
Deputies said if the dogs are not exposed to water, they would not know what to do when they have to respond in a real-life situation.
"There are chances a track or situations where they may be apprehensive, where the enemy might go through a creek or water and if that dog hasn't been exposed to it, they won't know how to react," Mathis said. "This is just to socialize them to an environment that they may be working in."
Some of the canines were a little afraid to get their paws wet, but over the course of the training exercise, they became more comfortable.
The water training is done once a year at the pool at Coonskin Park near Charleston. It has taken place at that location for the last 10 years.
