Flatwoods , Greenup County , Kentucky
Flashing lights at a home on Indian Run Road in Flatwoods raised immediate red flags for Thomas Evans, who recently moved from the neighborhood.
"I come down through here and I see police everywhere and I knew something was going on." he said.
Evans said he was disgusted to find out a meth bust happened at the home across the street from where he once lived. "Oh God, just what we need in our neighborhood," he said.
Flatwoods police responded to a welfare check at the home Tuesday when they found multiple active meth labs. "This right here was a complete surprise because I didn't known anything was going on at all," said Evans.
Police say unfortunately, meth use is on the rise in their area. Flatwoods Police chief Kraig Hankins said, "Since the pill trade has kind of diminished, people are turning to crystal meth. It's cheap to produce, easy to produce, and they really don't care about what harm it causes, because now, this house is contaminated."
Two people taken into custody on scene, but police say the woman who lives here was not involved, and her children were not home. Jessica Sammons of Wurtland and Ryan Cornwell of Ashland were charged with first offense manufacturing meth.
The FADE task force responded, and a decontamination team was called in from Frankfort to deal with the potentially deadly chemicals.
Hankins said the potential dangers are scary. "It can actually explode, and that's what we have to be careful with," he said.
It was a tense situation not only for police, but also neighbors. "It'd be scary to wake up in the middle of the night and you go outside and look across the street and there's a big fireball there, knowing that there could be adults and kids and everybody else at risk," said Evans.
