Fairlea, Greenbrier County , West Virginia
The West Virginia State Fair is underway in Fairlea.
It may be the first day, but it’s loaded with activities for the whole family to enjoy.
There are usually two reasons why people come to the fair.
“The food and the rides,” Adrienne Dye said.
Whatever the reason, fair organizers are optimistic 210,000 people will "feel the magic" over the next eight days, helping the state bring in $13 million.
The Gillette family has been operating their pizza truck at the fair for decades, they said if the first day is any indication, business will be booming.
“We've been here 20 years,” Brian Gillette said. “People are familiar with our product and business has been great. The weather has been fantastic and the fair has people coming in, so we can't complain."
Jossie Brooks is not complaining either. This year's fair is more than fun and games or showing off her beloved pigs.
“I love it,” she said. “I've always loved the fair ever since we started. I started showing little pigs when I was little.”
With concerts, carnival rides, a stunt and thrill show, comedic hypnotist, livestock exhibits and West Virginia’s strongest Mountaineer competition, there is plenty to take in at The State Fair of West Virginia.
This year’s fair opens Friday and runs through Aug. 17 in Fairlea in Greenbrier County, according to the fair’s website.
Plenty of activities are planned for opening day on Friday, Aug. 9, with gates opening at 8 a.m. Country singer Tate Stevens, winner of Fox’s second season of “The X Factor,” will perform at a free concert that begins at 8 p.m. Fireworks by the Zambellis are scheduled at 10 p.m.
