Nicholas County , West Virginia
A Nicholas County mother is facing child neglect charges for allegedly taking her autistic son's medications for herself.
While it's heartbreaking, the family involved said having mom Angela McCollum arrested is probably the best medicine she could get right now.
The family is broken apart, after Angela McCollam allegedly took a dozen of her six-year-old son's pills
"I said ‘My son's medicine, don't touch his medicine, that's my son's medicine,’" Shawn McCollam said.
Angela McCollam is in jail, and her family is left hoping it's the wake-up call she needs to get better.
"(The) best thing for her to do is to serve some time, do a little time, and, that way, she can have time to think about what she's done," Shawn McCollam said.
He said Angela McCollam had intentions of replacing the medicine, but instead kept it from their son for days. Without his medicine, the family said Christopher, who has autism, is just miserable.
Letters from his school expressed their concern.
“I love my wife,” Shawn McCollam said. “I love my children and our family is everything to us, but I believe in, like my mom and my dad raised us, that you do things in a godly way, and if you do anything wrong, there are consciences."
For Angela McCollam, those consequences are jail time, but her husband hopes, in the future, rehab will help her. And if not, the future of a relationship with her children could be over. But, no matter what, the family stands by her side.
Angela McCollam remains at the Central Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond. Her husband said he will not post bail, with hopes she will go through rehab.
