Kenova , Wayne County , West Virginia
A very large piece of city property was put up for auction in Kenova Saturday.
City leaders tried to auction off the old Kenova Elementary School, but had no success. They were scratching their heads and left wondering what's next, after a failed attempt to auction off the entire block
No bids were placed in the auction, leaving those looking to attract more business to Kenova frustrated.
"Nobody put a bid on it,” Rick Hitchcock of Kenova said. “Why you think that is? I don't know. It’s awful good property."
Kenova Councilman Don Bias also wondered why no bids were placed.
“I have no idea,’ he said. “We're on Route 75 and Route 60. We've got a new CVS store right across the street."
The school closed in May 2011 because of concerns with a gaping sink hole. It has been appraised at more than $1.1 million dollars, which was the opening bid for the auction,
The city council will take up the matter at its next meeting. Kenova's mayor said he'd like to see the old school bought and turned into senior complex or community center.
