It's not very often we get to share stories that remind us that good things do happen in the world today.
Tuesday afternoon we were given the opportunity to meet a young woman, who while pregnant, went into cardiac arrest . We were there for a very emotional reunion as that young woman was given the chance to thank the medical team that saved both her and her baby.
"I was a nervous wreck" says Alicia Petry as she walked into the Charleston hospital room full of the medical team that saved her life.
Thirty-five weeks into her pregnancy, Alicia started having breathing problems.
She was rushed to the triage unit at CAMC Women and Children's Hospital. Doctors determined her baby wasn't getting enough oxygen and they performed an emergency c-section. The baby was in good shape, Alicia wasn't.. She had gone into cardiac arrest.
Doctors say Alicia was in such bad shape they actually called her family in to say their goodbyes.
Despite the obstacles they faced, the medical team never gave up and after working several hours to resuscitate Alicia, they were able to bring her back.
While medicine and technology played a role in her survival, many of the members on that team say Alicia's survival story is a miracle.
