The handover of the Putnam County Health Department to Kanawha County is moving forward, but officials are still working to iron out all of the final details.
This Kanawha County Sanitarian Keith Lyons has been working in Putnam County since July 1. He told the board, not only were the restaurant inspections behind in Putnam County, but all the pools in the county were opened without water samples being taken. That has now been fixed.
“We've done restaurant inspections which were a little behind and we're trying to get those caught up,” Lyons said.
Lita Kirk, who is overseeing the new operation in Putnam County hopes, from here on out, those in Putnam County will start seeing better service.
“Hopefully, they'll see an expansion of services and immunizations and we hope to expand our clinical services,” Kirk said.
The Putnam County Health Department was so far in debt, it had to lay off all of its workers and hand over the responsibilities to Kanawha County. The department couldn't even purchase vaccinations because of the money trouble.
Now, Kanawha County will handle all of that, using its buying power, and using the money Putnam County gets from the state, which amounts to $414,000 per year.
Kanawha County employees have been covering both counties since July 1, but the West Virginia Division of Personnel is supposed to post several new positions on Monday to cover Putnam County.
They will be operating out of the new Department of Health and Human Resources building in Winfield until a more permanent space can be found.
