Martinsburg, Berkeley County , West Virginia
West Virginia State Police say they doing everything they can to keep crimes against children from happening, but the West Virginia State Police Crimes Against Children unit is in dire need of funding and support.
Troopers arrested Wade Eugene Decker, 25, in Martinsburg. He was charged with multiple felony counts, all centered around an alleged inappropriate relationship with an 11 year-old girl.
Troopers said Decker engaged in sexual conversations with the child, tried to set up a meeting with her and sent her nude pictures of himself.
Investigators said he also wanted the young girl to send him nude pictures.
For Kelly Stevens, who works as a babysitter, the thought of anything* happening to the children she cares for is something she can't bear.
"Children are our future, and they're more important than anything else,” she said. “They need to be protected."
West Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Michael Baylous said, without funding and support from the Legislature and the rest of the state, crimes like these would often go under the radar.
“We do not stand for this type of behavior in West Virginia,” Baylous said. “We value our family. We value our children and we're not going to allow this to continue."
As State Police wait and hope for support from the state government, Baylous had a message for those committing such horrific crimes.
"If you're out there, and you're involved in some of these crimes against children, I'm telling you the State Police of West Virginia and other law enforcement officers, will come and find you,” he said. “It's just a matter of time."
Decker's bond was set at $175,000. He is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail.
