A new legislative select committee is taking a look at strengthening laws to protect West Virginia's most vulnerable population.
The select committee on Crimes Against Children is made up of all 21 women serving in the House of Delegates. The lone woman in the Senate, Republican Donna Boley, will sit on the panel as a non-voting member.
The committee's co-chair said emphasis will be placed on stiffening child protection laws and increasing staff for the Crimes Against Children Task Force.
"We want to increase the manpower of the State Police, especially in the Crimes Against Children unit, so that's going to be a money issue. We've got to look at money and the governor's office is trying to help us get to this point, said Del. Linda Phillips, D-Wyoming.
Phillips said the committee will look at a variety of issues, including possible legislation related to women and children living in poverty and prescription drug addiction among expecting mothers.
