Roane County deputies said a driver has been charged with DUI resulting in death and DUI causing injuries, after his vehicle allegedly slammed into a building where several people were sleeping, killing one woman inside.
Chaz Simmons, 23, had nothing to say as he was being taken to jail.
He is facing several charges after deputies said he was drunk when he lost control of his truck Thursday morning, crashing it into this home on Route 36 near Left Hand.
A couple was sleeping inside the home.
Kelly Casto, 30, was killed instantly. Her boyfriend, William Cottrell, 38, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
"If he wouldn't have been drinking, this death wouldn't be here,” family member Larry Cottrell said. “My brother would not be in the shape he is in."
It was just starting to sink in for Larry Cottrell. He lives nearby and was able to pull the truck off of the couple.
"I tried to get him to shut off the truck and he tried to run over them two other times," he said. “I like to never got them out of there."
William Cottrell has a broken back, hips and bruised lungs, but family members are not the only ones devastated.
Those close to the suspect said Simmons had his problems, but they never thought it would come to this.
"Chaz was a good guy, in sports and everything,” his friend Jackson Craddock said. “It really breaks my heart."
Simmons is facing charges of DUI causing death and DUI causing injuries.
Roane County deputies said a driver has been charged with DUI resulting in death and DUI causing injuries after his vehicle allegedly slammed into a building where several people were sleeping, killing one woman inside.
Chaz Simmons was charged following an accident that happened about 2:30 a.m. Thursday on Clay Road in Left Hand, deputies said.
They said a pick-up truck crashed into a building with two people sleeping inside. Family members said Kelly Casto, 30, was killed and her boyfriend, William Ralph Cottrell, 38, suffered several major injuries. He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. Cottrell has bruised lungs, a broken hip and a severe back injury. Casto died at the scene.
Fighting back tears, Cotrell's brother, Larry, said his family is trying to make sense of it all.
"If he (Simmons) wasn't drinking this death wouldn't be here like this," said Larry. "My brother wouldn't be in the shape that he is. I tell you it's like a nightmare."
Simmons was arraigned Thursday morning in Roane County Magistrate Court. He was charged with DUI causing death and DUI causing injuries.
