This is not your daddy's Boy Scouts. High Adventure activities are taking place all over the Summit Bechtel Reserve, as Boy Scouts and co-ed Venturers learn new skills like sport shooting and riding all-terrain vehicles.
"I don't think I would be doing any high adventure if I hadn't joined Venturing," Miranda Forsythe of Cincinnati, Ohio said. "So, it's just really given me the opportunity to do new things. I think if you'd asked me a year ago if I would be doing ATV's, I would freaked out and been, like, "No." So it's really kind of brought me out of my shell."
The Boy Scouts of America polled members of the organization, asking them what they would like to see included in the national jamboree's program.
High-adrenaline activities ranked very well, so they have been added to bring the scouting experience up to date and to give thrill-seekers a chance to enjoy themselves while being trained and supervised.
"I've been in the Venture program for five years now," Tim Elder of Cincinnati, Ohio said. "We go whitewater rafting, coming out here doing this. We go rock climbing all the time. Just something new every year."
Boy Scouts of America National President Wayne Perry said West Virginia's mountainous terrain fits the organization's needs perfectly.
"God made West Virginia for the Boy Scouts," Perry said. "There is no doubt in my mind. The moon and the stars lined up here and there's no place that we would rather be, or should be or needed to be than West Virginia."
