Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia
Kanawha County will officially take over Putnam County's health department duties.
The decision came after an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon where 3 of the 5 board members voted in favor of the contract between the counties. This means Putnam County citizens will receive services from Kanawha County's health board. However, at the same time, money from those services will not actually go to Putnam County but to Kanawha, which was the main reason why two board members voted against the contract.
The contract will last six months and, at the end of that time period, board members will then reevaluate the situation, look at the health boards budget and decide what is next.
One board member said this solution may not be ideal but it is needed.
“We're trying to fix it,” Putnam board member Bryan Escue said. “It might not be the best way to do it, but it is a way to insure that they are getting the services. We promise that we are going to have a Putnam County health board that runs on its own."
The contract is effective immediately and has been since July 1.
Board members said they will meet again on Aug. 19 to discuss the health department’s future.
