Cannonsburg , Boyd County , Kentucky
More than a hundred graves will soon be relocated to make way for a road construction project in eastern Kentucky.
The Colvin Calvin Cemetery near Cannonsburg is more than 200 years old and soon it will be history.
The Department Of Highways needs to widen U.S. 60 between KY 180 and Interstate 64. Arnold Hughes lives by the cemetery and said relocating the graves is a good idea.
"It would be necessary because of the road condition," Hughes said. "It's a small two-lane and it has a lot of traffic on it. The last few years we've had bad accidents on it, so it needs to be widened."
DOH officials approached the Boyd County Fiscal Court to sign off on the planned relocations. The court approved the request Tuesday. Allen Blair with the DOH said the project "isn't something we're doing behind the scenes. We want to make sure people are well aware of what we're doing. We want to reach out to them."
The project is still a few years away. Anyone who has relatives in that cemetery should call the Kentucky DOH.
