A story posted on a satirical news website has caused some real-life backlash for Huntington Mayor Steve Williams after the site reported he had banned West Virginia University colors from the city.
Williams said his office received several irate phone calls from residents after the story was posted on the website "thediggerer" on Wednesday. Social media websites have also perpetuated the claim. Williams took to his Facebook account to address the situation the article caused.
The mayor wrote, "An article written by a 'reporter' named 'Alligator Jackson' has been brought to my attention. I haven’t read the article. But I understand I am supposedly quoted that the colors of blue and gold are now forbidden in the city of Huntington as well as any and all West Virginia University paraphernalia. How absurd. The article is a spoof. I have never been interviewed by anyone named Alligator Jackson. I did not make such a statement. I am a proud WVU graduate receiving a master’s degree in public administration. WVU is a world-class university."
