Boy Scouts attending the 2013 Jamboree in Fayette County are on the receiving end of a lot of fun activities. Now they are giving back.
Up to 40,000 Boy Scouts and thousands of additional youth and adult volunteers are being deployed for service projects by the Citizens Conservation Corps into a nine-county service area in Southern West Virginia, according to a news release from the Conservation Corps. The projects will take place in conjunction with the National Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
For the first time ever in the history of a national Jamboree, five days will be reserved for "giving back" community service projects. The initiative's five "Days of Service" are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday.
Projects will take place in Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming counties each of the five days.
This is the largest community service effort of its kind to ever be performed in the United States. More than 350 multiple day projects are designed to showcase aspects or qualities that make the experience unique and meaningful. The release said youth volunteers will participate in educational, conservation and recreational experiences that allow them to walk away with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Projects fall under one or more of the following categories: green-friendly, construction, infrastructure, wellness and arts and education. The initiative is expected to generate more than 300,000 hours of community service.
