Work was under way Monday that is sure to have area residents “beaming.” The first beam was being put into place on the replacement for the R.J. “Dick” Henderson Memorial Bridge.
State Department of Transportation officials said at least two beams will be in place this week. In all, five beams will connect the spans.
The bridge is closed for replacement; the project is expected to last about a year.
During the renovation, the bridge will be widened to three lanes and receive upgrades along with a new deck put on top of the existing bridge.
The price tag will be about $24 million. Highway officials said that is about half of what it would take to build a brand new bridge.
