The Kanawha County Commission now has a policy for filling vacancies in certain elected county offices.
Under the policy, the temporary appointee can serve for up to 30 days, with a permanent appointment in place before the end of the 30 days, according to a news release from the county commission. Kanawha County successfully pushed for an amendment to the state code during the past legislative session that would allow for a temporary appointment for vacation positions so the offices can continue to operate.
The elected offices affected by the amended code include the county commission, county clerk, prosecuting attorney, sheriff, assessor and surveyor.
“I felt it was important that the commission implement policy related to the filling of vacancies as unforeseen circumstances could result in a vacancy in an elected office at any time,” Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said in a prepared statement. “This legislation was one of my top priorities for the 2013 legislative session, and I am pleased that the temporary vacancy procedure has been approved. The commission now has a policy to follow if something should occur.”
