A local soldier, medically discharged, claims the system is failing him.
Two years ago, Adam Nelson fell 300 feet from an airplane during a combat training mission at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, breaking several bones and receiving severe head injuries.
Nelson said a paperwork mixup is holding up his pay and could leave him, his wife and four children homeless.
Things are looking brighter for Nelson. He, like many veterans, tends to fall through the cracks from time to time.
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller and U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall are helping Nelson get back on his feet financially, but he is not alone. Hundreds of veterans in the Tri-State have special needs.
There also are several programs available, ranging from budgeting classes to workforce employment, but veterans must qualify for certain services.
"We have a food pantry we offer for veterans in need," Lee Ann Bills of the Veterans Administration Homeless Center in Huntington said. "We have canned vegetables and things that were donated by local Walmart and Boy Scout groups and things like that. We also have a large donation room with hygiene, cleaning supplies, clothing, furniture. Whatever someone would need to move into housing."
There are also several programs available ranging from budgeting classes to workforce employment. But, veterans must qualify for certain services.
Any veterans who need assistance can contact their local Veterans Administration or resource center. If a financial dilemma is involved, it is best to get in touch with their representatives in Washington.
