The Greenbrier Classic draws big crowds who come out to enjoy the resort's beauty and get a close up look at the stars of the PGA Tour.
However, there are a few players who overshadow the rest.
Phil Mickelson is one of those players. He's been in the Greenbrier Classic field for the past three years, but has failed to make the cut every time.
"Everyone here comes out to see the stars, the same guys they see on television," Anthony Phillips of Bluefield, Virginia said. "I think it affects playability and spectators coming out to watch the game. Even though everyone got to enjoy him for two days you'd still like to see him win because he just got second in the U.S. Open."
"The saddest thing about it, Phil is such a fan favorite and if you couldn't get out here today and see Phil they're really missing out on a treat," Raleigh Worley of Richlands, Virginia said. "Phil is one of the greatest golfers that's ever lived and he'll always be a favorite because of the way he is with his fans and it's just...I don't know, maybe this course just doesn't suit his game."
A trio of lesser-known golfers have captured the first three Greenbrier Classic titles. While resort owner Jim Justice acknowledges they are worthy champions, even he admits having a bigger name win the tournament would provide a boost.
"Sure it would be meaningful," Justice said. "If one of the superstars. one of the real true champions who have been out there through countless licks and everything, have earned their stripes to win or be in the running coming down the stretch would be great."
But it will be at least another year before Mickelson has a chance to hoist the Greenbrier Classic trophy.
