Cross Lanes , Kanawha County , West Virginia
People in the Cross Lanes and western Kanawha County were cleaning up Wednesday after the previous day’s heavy flooding, and some were wondering why they didn’t receive more warning from the National Weather Service.
Bill Wright, whose home was damaged, did not mince any words when asked about whether he received any warning from the National Weather Service.
“No, not at all, absolutely none,” Wright said. “They said rain – just a passing storm. The only help we got was through the TV stations.”
The National Weather Service considered local drainage problems produced unusually high water along flood-prone areas such as Cross Lanes Drive. Some residents said the water level was as high as it has been in a decade, while others said it had not been that extreme since a huge flood in Kanawha County in 1961.
Damage was confined to a few homes in this edition of flooding. Goff Mountain Road had high water again. Previously, the road has been the site of some water rescues. Work is under way to correct some of the drainage problems there. On Tuesday, one ditch on the stretch of road had 10 to 12 feet of water in it.
