School security is being amped up in one part of Kentucky, as a panic alert system could be brought to Greenup County schools.
The new system is called Police Watch, connecting police instantly to the classroom in the event of a crisis.
The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., is still on the mind of Yvonne Riedel, who lives in Greenup County, along with her two grandchildren.
"We cried for days," Riedel said.
She said it's encouraging for her to learn of a new security system being installed in county schools. It instantly allows police to take a live look, in high-definition, in the event of an emergency.
Russell Police Department Detective Adam Davis said the system cuts out the middle man of a call center, which most security systems have.
"It’s instant. It gets rid of the layers," Davis said.
As Greenup County hopes to install the system, Riedel's hope for the safety of her grandchildren is secure.
"You would never think your kid would go to school and not return,” she said. “If it makes the kids safe, and makes them feel safer, then it makes me feel safer."
The Police Watch system is expected to be installed soon. A demonstration was given Friday to school members and first responders.
