Authorities have released the name of the miner who died at a Patriot Coal subsidiary's operation in Southern West Virginia. State mine safety officials said Asa Fitzpatrick, 63, of Kermit died Wednesday evening at Newtown Energy's Peerless Rachel Mine in Racine. State spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said Thursday that rock from the mine roof fell on the miner as he prepared to install a roof bolt. She said Fitzpatrick had 40 years of coal mining experience. The accident is the fifth mining-related fatality in West Virginia this year. It's the first since Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin urged a statewide time-out for safety talks in February. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration said Fitzpatrick died after he was brought to the surface. The mine employs about 130 workers. Copyright 2013 Associated Press. All rights reserved. The accident took place at avbout 5:45 p.m. at Newtown Energy’s Peerless Mine in the Racine area. The miner was seriously injured when a rock fell from the roof of the mine and struck him, according to a news release from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The miner, a roof bolter operator on the Unit 1 section of the mine, was brought to the surface and died as a result of his injuries. Wednesday's death is the fifth in a little more than a month in West Virginia. The mine is controlled by Patriot Coal Corporation and has a little more than 130 workers. Emergency dispatchers said a miner was hurt this afternoon in a mining accident in Boone County on Wednesday. No information is yet available on what happened to cause the accident, which took place just after 5:00 p.m. at the Peerless Mine in the Comfort area, but the injured miner was taken to CAMC General.
