Officials have announced traffic plans and additional details for Friday’s demolition of the Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge that connects to Nitro. At about 8:30 a.m., the Nitro Police Department and Nitro Public works will shut down Center Street (going toward the bridge from state Route 25), according to a news release from the Nitro Police Department. Route 25 will still be open, but no traffic will be permitted onto Center Street. Police said at about 9:30 a.m., Main Avenue at Holly Street will be shut down. Also at 9:30 a.m., on the river side of the railroad tracks, there will be no traffic permitted and no foot traffic between Holly and Blackwood streets between the railroad tracks and the river. The best place to view the detonation will be from Roadside Park in St. Albans. There also will be an area near Center Street just off of state Route 25, where the public and media will be able to see the demolition. This area also will be the area where the detonation button will be pressed by the two Nitro citizens chosen at city council on Tuesday. Meanwhile, police said the procedure for the blast will be similar to last week’s demolition in St. Albans. Those in the area will hear siren blasts at 9:55 a.m. (five-minute warning) and at 9:58 a.m. (two minute warning). The detonation will occur at 10 a.m. You can watch live stream coverage of the bridge demolition at wchstv.com starting at 9:45 a.m., and see live TV coverage on WVAH Fox 11 at 9:55 a.m. Police reminded everyone who will be in the area for the demolition to please pay attention to all emergency services workers, and the employees from the construction company. The officials also said the blast will be loud, so any children in the area should wear hearing protection. After the detonation, an inspection will occur to ensure everything went properly. All blocked off areas will open shortly after the all clear is given. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
