Seeing the Dick Henderson Bridge come down was a sight many enjoyed, but it probably meant much more for three St. Albans who were chosen by the mayor to symbolically "flip the switch."
Three women making history, and clearing the way for bigger and better things for a place they love.
Lorraine Henderson is the wife of the late Dick Henderson, for whom the bridge is named. She says he would be thrilled if he were here today to see the progress St. Albans has made.
"He really, really would because he was on many many projects in this area and he would be very excited," she says.
"How many...how many people get to do this?" says Margaret Bassett. Her roots in St. Albans go back to 1908.
Anything you want to know about St. Albans, and she's your go to lady. Even writing two books that outline the history of the city. She couldn't believe when Mayor Dick Callaway wanted her to be a part of history.
"He said, 'would you like to blow up a bridge?' I said I've been wanting to blow up a bridge my whole life!" she laughs.
When Q.D. Woods was 5 years old, her brother loaded her up in a red wagon and took her to the bridge dedication in 1934. She's believed to be one of the first to cross the bridge.
"I can't believe my life has been so great," she says.
Humbled at the honor, she's already planning her next big move.
"I've been here long enough. I'm not through. Like I said, I'm going to walk that new bridge!" she says laughing.
Three women paving a path to a brighter future for a place so close to their hearts.
"You know I could sit here and die or I could go out and get out and have a good time and be busy. And blow up the bridge," she says.
