It probably sounded like a great idea for the new year -- get in shape and lose some weight. This year, that gym membership wasn't going to waste. But now at the end of February, life has stepped in the way. Eyewitness News went to a local gym in Charleston and met people such as Julie Warden and Jim Henderson. Both have been exercising more since the beginning of the year. "Some days I don't have the time to run very far, so I just run the short distance. If I commit to come to the gym, I'll usually do a short run and then work with the trainer at least once a week. The rest of the week it's up to me to be motivated to come," Jim Henderson of Charleston said. Julie Warden of Charleston said getting in shape has definitely been hard work. "I'm here all the time working out," she said. But working on your endurance and strength isn't easy to do. That's why millions of Americans make working out a New Year's resolution. That resolution may seem hard to abide by toward the end of February and early March. "They're in here for two or three weeks and don't see those instant results that they want, so they kind of lose a little bit of their motivation," said Lyndsey Lewis, personal trainer at Nautilus. Trainers say motivation is key, and if you don't have it, you could near a "physical cliff." "The reality is that it takes time; it takes commitment. And if you do it the right way, you're not going to see instant results in three or four weeks. It does take time," Lewis said. Experts suggest setting goals at the gym to stay motivated. For Warden, it paid off. "I said I wanted to eat healthier, and I wanted to do a pull up. I've already reached that goal," she said. If you are thinking about nearing the "physical cliff," stick with it and find the time to make 2013 a healthy year. Henderson said it takes commitment.
