A fire in Roane County leaves two families without a home. "We came up here and realized it was her's and we've been here ever since," said Sarah Salisbury, "Just watching it slowly go down and realize she's lost everything." Sarah Salisbury is the daughter of Cathy Keaton, who lost her home in an explosion. An explosion that destroyed two homes. The explosion sparked a massive fire on High Street in Spencer around 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Neighbors say they heard that explosion. "I heard an explosion. Actually it sounded like something heavy had dropped in the house because the house shook a little," said James Montgomery, one of Keaton's neighbors, "And that's when I could see the fire coming out of the house there." It took six fire departments and more than 30 firemen to put out the flames. "When firefighters arrived of course both houses was engulfed with fire," said Spencer fire chief, Rob Miller, "And these houses are only fifty feet about here in this neighborhood right here from across the street. It actually pretty amazing that only one of the other house actually burned." Luckily, no one was injured or home at the time of the fire, but two homes were ruined and two others suffered heat damage. Firefighters were able to contain the flames quickly before other homes were damaged. A destructive fire, but neighbors say they're thankful for what remains. "Especially when you know the people and you see them standing there watching their house burn down, it's a reality check," said Montgomery "Your blanket and your couch and stuff. That's not what's important.," said Salisbury, "Be appreciative of what you have because when something like this happens, you definitely, it makes you think. You never know when it could be your last day." Two homes in Spencer were fully engulfed by a fire Saturday afternoon, Roane County emergency dispatchers said. The fire on High Street started in the afternoon following an explosion. No one was reported injured in the blaze and no evacuations of the area were necessary, dispatchers said.
