Heroin use is on the rise in Huntington. The Huntington Police Department said their heroin seizures doubled from 2011-2012, and the problem seems to be getting worse. In the past few years, the major crackdown on prescription drug abuse has made pills less available and addicts have found other highs. "As those become more and more difficult to get, heroin is cheaper ," said Capt. Hank Dial of the Huntington Police Department. But unlike a pill, you can't know the potency of heroin. "Make no mistake, there's no such thing as good or bad heroin,” Dial said. “ It's all bad heroin." The unpredictability is leading to more and more overdoses. In the last six months of 2012, 44 of 66 overdose calls in Huntington were heroin-related. That averages out to about three per week. Captain Dial said police recently got a call about a woman whose car was stopped in the middle of the road. "She was unconscious, there was a needle in her arm, and there was a small child in a car seat in the car with her,” Dial said. “You know these kind of things are just very alarming." Police said West Huntington seems to be a hot spot for heroin and more violent crime recently. James Lambert is a victim. "They door-jammed me, ran me over with a vehicle, jumped out and robbed me," Lambert said. Lambert said he's noticed things starting to get cleaned up, but knows there is work to be done. Dial said police will take strategies they know have worked in the Weed and Seed areas of Huntington to fight this growing problem. "We're making a lot of seizures and we're making those arrests,” Dial said. “We will shut this down." Anonymous tips regarding problem areas of heroin can be reported to the Huntington Police Department crime tip line. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
