Law enforcement officers across the Tri-State are cracking down on drug trafficking, particularly drugs coming into Huntington from Detroit.
U.S. 23 and Route 52 create direct routes from larger cities north of the Tri-State.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has been tackling the problem. Last week, two major busts within two hours near Lucasville. More than a thousand pills, cocaine and heroin were intercepted; police say most of the drugs were destined for Huntington. Five people were arrested.
Sgt. Michael Akers said 2013 has already brought major success not even two months in, and authorities said they have taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in drugs off the streets.
"So far this year, the Portsmouth post has seized over 8,600 prescription pills. 740 grams of cocaine and 340 grams of heroin this year," Akers said.
