"Sleuth" is set in the Wiltshire manor house of a very successful mystery writer. Andrew Wyke's home reflects his love of inventions and the art of fictional deception. But he also enjoys playing games and that sets the stage for the action.
Wyke's wife is having an affair, so he invites her lover to visit and stage a robbery, which sets off a series of events that leaves you wondering what is real and what is imagined.
"It's a terrifically written mystery-thriller, not in the line of a whodunit," Paul Neace (Andrew Wyke) said. "Because there's never really any doubt as to whodunit. But getting to the whodunit and all of the little intricate plot weaves that go on is what makes the show so deliciously fun."
"Sleuth" was written in 1970 and won a Tony Award for Best Play. The maneuvering of Wyke as he manipulates his world has kept audiences guessing about his true motives for more than four decades. As the plot unfolds, plans of revenge and murders dominate the action, with two men vying to win the ultimate game of life and death.
"This is one of my very first leads," Joshua Drew (Milo Tindle) said. "And, you know, Milo does all kinds of crazy things. He sings an Italian song. He gets nearly naked on stage, like I'm all the way into my underwear. And I dress up like a clown and sing opera."
Neace said if cast members do their job "we're going to get some gasps out of the audience throughout the whole performance. And the kind of thing where they will hopefully leave the show thinking, 'Wow, that was different.' "
