Practicing for an emergency, that's what prompted lockdowns at schools across Kanawha County Wednesday.
Eyewitness News showed up at South Charleston High School and found school officials checking to make sure classrooms were locked, lights were turned out and students and staff were quiet.
School officials and police believe now is the time to practice, so that if and when an emergency situation does arise, everyone knows what to do.
"The more the students get used to them, it doesn't shock them or surprise them, and they almost learn how to respond to it," said Lt. Stan Miller, a prevention resource officer with Kanawha County Schools. "We want it to just come natural that if, heaven forbid, they would know what to do and do it without any problem."
The lockdown began promptly at 9:31 a.m. countywide and lasted for about half of an hour.
