The mayor of a small southeastern Ohio town has resigned over accusations that she made derogatory comments about Kyle Calendine, a gay police officer.
Jackie Welker, council president in the Village of Pomeroy, told The Associated Press that Mayor Mary McAngus submitted a letter of resignation on Saturday.
Eyewitness News went to McAngus's home Sunday afternoon. No one answered her front door or telephone.
Calendine said McAngus has repeatedly referred to him as "queer" in front of other officers and dispatchers.
"She said Mark look at this, he's 'queer,'" Calendine said. "I don't like it, what are we going to do about it."
The 78-year-old's resignation comes on the heels of Pomeroy police Chief Mark Proffitt's warning to the council this week that McAngus' alleged comments could open the village to a civil-rights lawsuit.
Proffitt told the AP on Friday that he supports gay rights and that McAgnus created a hostile work environment.
Daniel Folmer of Pomeroy doesn't necessarily agree with homosexuality, said it has nothing to do with the officer's ability to protect and serve.
"It's what he wants we cant do anything about it," Folmer said. "As long as he does his job."
