For nearly 30 years, the Charleston Town Center Mall lunch bunch has enjoyed some of the best Mediterranean food the city has to offer at a third floor food court staple. The Best of Crete restaurant has been here since the mall opened its doors.
But the ride is coming to an end. On February 28th, owner Mike Birurakis is shutting the eatery down. His loyal customers are taking the news pretty hard.
"I'm highly disappointed. It's the main reason I come into the mall half the time. It's the end of an era," Scott Smith of Putnam County said.
Birurakis says the restaurant has been a great experience but the time is right for a new chapter in his life.
"We've been here for 30 years but it's time to move on to a new situation that's maybe a better match for the store," Mike Birurakis said.
Birurakis says he gave his loyal staff of five workers plenty of notice about his decision. One employee has been with the restaurant for 13 years and no one has worked here less than three years.
Birurakis' mother founded Best of Crete and operated it before selling to Mike a decade ago.
"Happy and sad, both of them, really," Joann Birurakis said. "I want to thank all the people that supported us all these years. The whole city that was good to us and I hope we was good for the city."
"This is going to be a hard change for everybody but in the long run I think it will work out great," Mike Birurakis said.
Birurakis says he's going to take some time off, but there is a possibility he will re-open a small takeout and catering location if he can find the right space in the capital city.
The mall's general manager says talks are already underway to find a Picnic Place replacement for Best of Crete.
