An audit of the Chespeake Volunteer Fire Department has sparked a criminal investigation.
The department first caught the attention of Kanawha County commissioners with the large amount of money it was bringing in from bingo and raffles. Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants is heading up the investigation.
The department brought in $4.2 million in 2009 and 2010. Commissioners said the department was not forthcoming with its books and the commissioners were suspicious.
The audit has already cost taxpayers about $15,000. The fire department has already handed over its books.
