Citizens and environmental activists will descend on Frankfort next week to call for an end to the practice of mountaintop removal mining.
They call it "I Love Mountains Day," and it annually attracts hundreds of people to the capital to protest the strip mining practice, which blasts and scrapes away layers from the top of mountains. Environmentalists say the practice pollutes streams and scars the land.
The event is Feb. 14 and begins with activists lobbying in the Capitol annex. Then they'll gather at noon at the Kentucky River below the bridge and march about a half-mile to the Capitol building for the rally.
The rally includes music and guest speakers and is organized by Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. This year's speaker is eastern Kentucky author Silas House.
