More than two dozen people are out of a job in Wurtland, Kentucky after a plant closes its doors. Thirty employees at the SunChemical Performance Pigments found out Monday morning the plant was closing.
Wurland Mayor Donna Hayes said, "We were very surprised to get the phone call, very surprised."
The plant had been in business in Wurtland for more than 20 years. Five years ago, the plant shut down for six months, but reopened. The plant makes blue ink for printers. Mayor Hayes said she blames the bad economy for the closing.
Hayes said, "It affects us all and the families, some of these people live in Wurtland. They're already wondering where they're going to find another job."
City Commissioner Connie Crum says she's optimistic community leaders will help create new jobs for the families. "Our Judge Executive works really hard to bring in new people. I assume he'll get right on this and see what he can bring in the area."
Some of the thirty employees will stay on board for four to six weeks to help close and clean the plant.
